Territory and Climate

Basilicata, also known as Lucania, is a region of Southern Italy, which extends over an area of about 10,000 square kilometers and has a population of nearly 580,000 inhabitants (ISTAT 2013). Includes two provinces of Potenza (regional capital cities) that counts 100 municipalities and that of Matera that has 31. It is bordered to the South-West by the Tyrrhenian Sea and South-East by the Ionian Sea, and borders to the North and East with the Puglia, to the south with Calabria and Campania to the West. The territory, mainly mountainous (47)%, hilly (45%) have a single great Plain (8%), the plain of Metaponto. Basilicata, thanks to the uniqueness and biological diversity present in its territory and to the extremely varied heritage of flora and fauna, presents natural varieties, environmental and landscape unique in their kind.
